While pretty much universally considered to be a better option, they are still looked down on, but I've known people who are happy with them. seem to be not worth considering now that Hi Points exist. RIA / Armscor generally have a reputation of being serviceable, but not nearly as well finished as the equivalent models from major brands. Generally new revolvers are considered okay, so you'll probably be okay.

Taurus still seems to be a bit of a 'luck of the draw' situation.

If you're not subject to hard budget constraints, buy decent gear and take pride in it.īut, you know, if you just want a range toy 1911 and it's worth $350 to you, why not? I like my ATI 1911, even though I had to fix it a few times. I mentally group my collection into "slots", and if I have one quality single stack 9mm carry gun, there's not a lot of reason for me to buy a second cheap one. A person who has trained with their cheap gun beats a doofus who bought an STI and only ever put 50 rounds through it.īut, that said, I have found budget brands to be unrewarding. Both were sold and put toward better guns due to my dissatisfaction with the build quality and my desire to get more serious.Ī bird in the hand is worth two in the bush, and a gun you have thoroughly tested yourself is worth more than an unknown quantity you haven't tested. They were cheaply made and had awful plasticky triggers, but they did work. In my specific case, I can say that both of them ran reasonably well.

People seem to have no trouble with their Charter Arms Revolvers and everyone who's bought a Rock Island 1911 appears to be happy with them. I don't think I'll ever buy one of their semi-auto pistols but I'm on the fence with their revolvers. What is the general consensus here on budget brands? It appears Taurus is trying to clean up their image recently by amping up quality control but I'm still not convinced to actually buy one. 45 ACP revolvers in stores many times and almost slapped down some cash but talked myself out of it due to how cheaply made they felt in hand. At one point I did have a Taurus 617 but I didn't put enough rounds through it before I sold it to make a determination if it's a trusty and reliable weapon. I've almost pulled the trigger so to speak on various Taurus revolvers many times but a little voice in the back of my head always tells me to put the card away, exit the browser and slowly back away from the computer.
